Yep that's correct, with my slow traveling connection I start the download and close the page. Then go on with my business, there are very few videos it can't download.:D
Again I want to recognize all of you who have provided this invaluable info.
Follow-up question. Now that you all have informed me of how to download streaming video files, how do I convert flv files to media player format (mpeg, wmv. etc...) using VLC media player?
I have VLC player 9.9 and see the options for convert/save but am clueless where to go from there.
Thanks in advance.

VLC is just a media player Sully it won't convert any format.
There is a convert feature built into DownLoadHelper itself, right click on DLH and enter the preferences tab, click on conversion tab and make sure the box is ticked. any .flv file will now convert into the .wmv format after you have downloaded them.
Unfortunately it does place a small watermark in the corner as the software isn't entirely free.
not exactly true... while not the easiest to use, VLC does infact have transcoding or converting features; it's what I use when I have to convert a file... your VLC should have a "wizard" which handles this transcoding... give it a try; if you still need help just ask ;)
Or get prism video converter,it has a 30 day trial and will convert video, photo and music files. After 30 days, uninstall and reinstall and carry on.I have been using it for over a year and there are very few files it won't convert.:D
NICE! I'll find this very usefull
Thanks to all for your wealth of knowledge. I have been stumped for months trying to do the conversion.
