Free Video Conversion Software

Our new camera that we got saves movies as .mov files. I, personally, think Quicktime is a piece of junk player that I'd rather not have to use again. So I was wondering if anyone knows of a free vid conversion program that converts .mov to .wmv or .avi. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

this seems to work though it's hard to predict what size the files will end up, i tried it with a 3 mb mov and it created a 20 mb avi but the options are there to mess about with...

Dustin, this is what I use to convert Videos from one file type to another, but I don't have any .mov files to convert to make sure it works with that file. However, since it's free you can try it out for yourself. I look forward to seeing your newest video's of you and your beautiful girl, Tonya.

It does great but it stamped a big "Buy Now" link on Tonya's forehead in the vids that it creates. Do you know of a way to get it out of the vids w/o purchasing the software or making people think Tonya's up for sale. LOL

I totally forgot about that. I ended up buying it because it worked so good (except for the stamp), but no, I don't know of any way to get rid of the stamp without buying it. Sorry.

I had tried Windows Movie Maker yesterday and it didn't work... Turns out all I needed to do was update quicktime and it would be able to read the files. It works great, now I gotta polish up on my video editing skills. Thanks for the help you guys.

It will convert anything to anything. Not very easy to use as you need an understanding of codec's etc.

*.mov is Mpeg4 the state of the art video compression , because it is a proprietary Apple format
it has poor compatibility with Windows media player. I can't tell you the number of times I have had
to clean out the Windows registry to reinstall Apple's own Quicktime product because it becomes
unusable. Quicktime "alternative" is more stable with Media player but only because it is simpler.

Beware that I guarantee nothing and your results can be less than you hope for.
My last read of your post indicates you are satisfactied with Windows Movie maker. Stay with that.
If you are really determined to convert the *.mov to another format such as *.avi ,

Can't wait to see your films

Below is the link to the only source for build 19 of the above program that can convert anything into
anything else and with near professional quality if you know what you're doing when selecting options
such as bitrates. This will nag you to upgrade which I did to the later build 21 and I recommend
you do N O T since it takes up to a minute to start up unlike the earlier build 19. Just remember that
nothing is completely free and without a downside , though I have yet to determine what their " hook " is.

I do N O T recommend you use build 21 instead of 19 above. One last warning , installation of
build 21 will not allow substituting the earlier 19, in which case you're stuck.
