    Default windows vista

I have heard whispers here and there of vista "sucking ass" does anyone have the lowdown or problems to watch out for? I have had it for a month, it was what the computer I bought was installed with.

I haven't had any problems, but am curious.

    Thanks

I am hanging on to my old XP box for dear life after my experiences with my fiance's Vista machine. other than being slower than a drunken turtle stuck on a rock, Vista ain't half bad (provided you don't have to put up with the 'new, improved' versions of Word, Excel, etc -- they're absolute disasters)

Been using Vista since it's release, and works fine. Never had a problem. In fact, I love it.

    Thumbs down it sucks !

For a common user it might be ok. But for the somewhat more skilled one you'll see immediately how this is a rip off !
It uses so much of your system that you end up with a 'older' pc
It may look nice, there are numerous bugs in it. Most of the older programms do not work, ... also it takes forever to start, needs new downloads every day ... of yes no more blue screens that is right ..... they are black now

Microsoft slowly starts to admit that the release was too early and that there are many problems .... don't buy

if you're not gonna need old progs its nothing to worry about, also there arent any new bugs, it loads just about the same as xp and doesnt need new downloads every day

i have 2 copies myself, 1 (32bit home premium) for my internet 'always on' comp, and 1 (64bit ultimate) for my games comp, had the ultimate since launch and no probs other than real old games not liking it.

the bsod is still blue btw

every pc or laptop brought to me with a problem has taken twice as long to boot as xp, they always leave my care with xpPro.

    I suppose it depends.

Vista is an improvement on Windows XP, it comes with better security out of the box with User Access Control (not running as Administrator), makes XP look a little out of date (with the 3d Areo Glass interface) and has the the latest version of Windows Media Player (v11). It comes on nearly all new PC's sold and *will* become the version of Windows everyone will be running over the next few years.

There are some other extra's with Vista depending on what edition you get. See,

    http://www.microsoft.com/windows/pro...ns/choose.mspx

    and,

    http://www.helpwithwindows.com/Windo...h-version.html

Is it worth the price of the upgrade from XP?

I'd say probably not if your PC is older and you have older software, if newer then possibly so but as you can see it doesnt really come with much extra.

    System requirements for Windows Vista
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/919183

    System requirements for Windows XP
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314865/en-us

It should be noted that the above 2 links are the minimum just to get it working and you should always try to aim higher to get the best out of Windows. (Windows XP requires far less memory and diskspace)

If going to Vista you may find problems with hardware and drivers if you have some more unusual hardware, some of your software may not work and may require the Vista versions. Take a look at,

    http://www.microsoft.com/windows/pro...deadvisor.mspx

for help on if your PC might have any issues.

If you dont mind a bit of a tinker then you could even take a look at free Windows alternatives such as,

The one thing I have noticed with vista is you need,I mean really need, 2 gigs of ram. Otherwise you are asking for slow death speeds,I run 2 old programs on it ok,it does funny stuff sometimes, see my post on a virus that wasn't in the help section. The one program I run is 10+ years old and the other is maybe 7,both games that run fine but run better in xp compatibility mode. I really haven't found any programs that just won't run on it. I would not upgrade an old machine with less ram and slower processer,it aint gonna work good.By the way, this from the link above-
    * An 800 MHz processor
    * 512 MB of RAM
    * A 20 GB hard drive with 15 GB of free space
is a load of shit ,it will not run on that.

Default Important if you run Vista

There is a recovery option available that you must have to confidently repair
a trashed or dead system. Read about it here _
    http://www.pcworld.com/downloads/fil...scription.html

The site itself has two versions available, one for a 32 bit system ( why would
anyone run Vista on a 32 bit system, Vista operates lousy on anything thats
not 64 bit ) and one for 64 bit systems.
