    Unlocking WinXP's setupp.ini
    ============================

    WinXP's setupp.ini controls how the CD acts. i.e. is it an OEM version
    or retail? First, find your
    setupp.ini file in the i386 directory on
    your WinXP CD. Open it up, it'll look something like this:

    ExtraData=707A667567736F696F697911AE7E05
    Pid=55034000

    The Pid value is what we're interested in. What's there now looks like
    a standard default. There are special numbers that determine if it's a
    retail, oem, or volume license edition.

    First, we break down that number into two parts. The first five digits
    determines how the CD will behave, i.e. is it a retail CD that lets you
    clean install or upgrade, or an OEM CD that only lets you perform a
    clean install?

    The last three digits determines what CD key it will accept. You are
    able to mix and match these values. For example you could make a
    WinXP CD that acted like a retail CD, yet accepted OEM keys.

    Now, for the actual values. Remember the first and last values are
    interchangeable, but usually you'd keep them as a pair:

    Retail = 51882 335
    Volume License = 51883 270
    OEM = 82503 OEM

    So if you wanted a retail CD that took retail keys, the last line
    of your setupp.ini file would read:

    Pid=51882335

    And if you wanted a retail CD that took OEM keys, you'd use:

    Pid=51882OEM

    NEW GENUINE WINDOWS VALIDATION KEY.rtf
    ======================================

    For all those people who couldn't update their XP with SP2 b'coz their
    windows key was invalid, can now change their key to a valid one!!!!!!
    There is a simple step to change your key without reinstalling the OS.
    Heres how, first copy the code below in between the two lines onto
    notepad and save it as
    step1.reg

    ( do not copy the ____ lines ____ though, just the text in between )

    ______________________________

    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\WPAEvents]
    "OOBETimer"=hex:ca,82,b8,55,d4,04,b5,cf,cc,5b,24,00

    ______________________________

    now copy this code onto another note pad file and save this as step3.reg

    ( Again do not copy the lines )

    ______________________________

    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\WPAEvents]
    "OOBETimer"=hex:ca,82,b8,55,d4,04,b5,cf,cc,5b,24,97

    ______________________________

    Don't panic ! you're right, there is a step in between....!!!

    Now before starting, close all windows applications running, and DISCONNECT
    from the internet.

    Click on the
    step1.reg file, answer yes to entering it in the registry.
    This deactivates Windows. go to
    Start and click on 'RUN' then type in

    C:\WINDOWS\system32\oobe\msoobe.exe /a

    ( don't leave out that space before /a )

    select the option telephone customer service and click next.. now you have a
    button at the bottom of the screen
    'CHANGE PRODUCT KEY' click this... next you
    see the screen where you have to enter the key...
    But where will you get a VALID GENUINE KEY ?....wait I got it.... it is.....

    T6T38-WJTK6-YVJQ7-YC6CQ-FW386

    Now click the 'update' button at the bottom. The activate Windows by phone window
    will reappear at this point, just close it by clicking the
    'X' in the upper
    right hand corner. Click on the
    step3.reg file. This reactivates Windows.
    You are now done. You now have a valid GENUINE version of Windows XP !

    Oooppsssss ! ........why does the key work????
    The key that I have given you is a Windows XP CORP edition key...this key is
    used for people who have hundreds of systems ...by using this key
    anyone can make their Windows XP GENUINE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Important Note: Before you read on, you need to keep one thing in mind.
    Whenever you make changes to the Windows Registry you need to Refresh it
    before the changes take place. Simply press F5 to refresh the registry and
    enable the changes. If this does not work Restart your system.

    P.S.
    In case you wondered what
    'msoobe' means, it is Microsoft Out Of Box Experience,
    I just have to wonder if those Microsoft employees actually have a life.

    AVOID PRODUCT ACTIVATION AFTER REINSTALLING WINDOWS
    ================================================== =

    It's reported that Windows Product Activation files record hardware changes every
    120 days. This produces a Hardware ID. You are allowed 7 hardware changes on a
    desktop during the 120 days. A Network Interface card ( ethernet ) will count as
    3 changes. If you change the motherboard or make significant hardware changes,
    XP will require you to reactive. But if you just reinstall XP on the same hardware,
    you can back up the activation status and then restore it after you reinstall and
    avoid the activation process.

    EXCEPT FOR THIS LAST ENTRY I HAVE NOT PERSONALLY VERIFIED THE AUTHENTICITY OF ALL

    THE OTHER ASSERTIONS ABOVE BUT I THOUGHT THEM INTERESTING ENOUGH TO PASS ALONG.

    All kinds of good info here but if I have to go through all of that why not use Linux or BSD? Plus the advantage of not nearly as many security holes and all the open source software your hard drive could handle!
