I still get the "wrong resolution" error message. All the videos are in AVI and some of them play and some don't. I have a Panasonic Blue Ray DMP-BDT210 and a Philips DVP3560 DVD player, which I was told is the most universal DVD player and would play any format. And it does play some of the AVI files, just not most of them. Any suggestions ould be much appreciated.
Ok, to let you understand the extension .avi is just a "container format", ie there are many different codecs that can be housed within it, if it has been converted as an .avi file but using a different codec then this might be a problem for your stand alone player.
As for your "wrong resolution" message I will try and guide you through a FormatFactory set up step by step:

    1- Open FF
2- Open the folder that contains the clip you wish to convert
3- Drag and drop the clip into the right hand window
4- Click on "All to AVI" in the left pane of the pop up box
5- Click on the "Setting" button
6- In the box that opens under "Video Stream" you will find various settings that can be altered to suit, the first one that needs to be altered is "Video Encode", in the "Value" pane, video encode may show as AVC(H264), left click in that pane and you will see an arrow appear at the far side. Click on that and in the drop down box select MPEG4(DivX)
7- Do exactly the same for the next selection "Video Size", the value will be set at default, click on it and in the drop down chose whatever size you think suits your player, this will enlarge the clip, so be aware if the clip is of poor quality and poor resolution, it may not look great stretched and upscaled to fit a 42" tv screen.
8- The next setting down is Bitrate, you can alter that also but remember the larger the bitrate the larger the overall file will become, increasing this on a run of the mill quality clip will not improve it any.
9- FPS, if you wish to change the frames per second of the clip you can do that here, I seldom bother with it to be honest.
10- Aspect Ratio, you can alter how the clip is shown here, I tend to stick to 16:9 but there is all an option to fully expand it. The other settings below I wouldn't worry too much about.
11- Click ok and this will bring you back to the original window

Finally before converting, if the clip you have has these black bands top and bottom, you can use FF's crop feature to get rid, do this by right clicking the clip in the main window, chose option in the drop down, in the top right hand corner, tick the crop button, drag the red guidelines to capture only what you want to view, then click ok.

That's it you are now ready to commence converting, good luck

Well I ended up just using the Format Factory to convert everything to AVI and then I used the Windows DVD maker to burn DVD's and it worked. It just takes longer to convert everything. Thanks for all your help and suggestions
