    Unhappy Aarg! Hard drive failure!

My Seagate 2TB external hard drive has just failed. I have lost my entire porn collection-about 7 years of work. I have tried a few things (including putting it in the freezer as I was advised by one IT 'expert' friend!). It seems that my only possible option is a professional recovery company but I am hesitant to try that for obvious reasons.
    Any suggestions?

If its normal porn what's the problem for sending it in. Something more personal then ouch. This is why everything doesn't go on one drive without RAID support. Oh well, can you connect to the drive?

Yikes! Hope you get the help you need.

Would be curious to hear from others what the best way would be to prevent this. 7 years is a lot of shit stored!!

Have never heard of RAID support.

Sometimes it's just the "pcb" that has died.
    Open up the external case.
Find out what kind of hard drive it is, brand and model number.
Order an identical drive and swap the circuit board.

It's hard to give advise when your problem-describtion is just the word "failed" BUT I had the same problem:

    Default spinrite

I second rachel4fun's vote on spinrite - a good tool. However, I've never learned how to use it on external hard drives. spinrite is owned by a small company and I've heard their help line support is good, so my vote is to try that.

Recuva is really good - It saved files fro me from an external USB disc, that wasn't recognized by windows...

As stated before if the external case is dead open it, get an USB adaptor for the harddrive and use some recover software.

Some years a go I did a full revocer of a "dead" drive with no file table with Ontrack EasyRecovery Pro, since then I always recommend it.
