Default Safari adds extension - any suggestions?

I've recently switched to Safari from Firefox because it gives much longer battery life on my Mac.

When downloading hjsplit files using Safari, a .mpg extension is added to all the .00* files and even to .avi files. You then have to delete the extension manually before you can concatenate them. Does anyone know how to stop Safari doing this annoying little bit of "helping". or do you have a script or automator routine that could clean things up?

    Cheers

    The Prrpster

I use chrome for max battery life but if you want to use safari download NameChanger for mac as it batch renames anything and is a very useful tool.
