If you don't fancy manually going into your registry to remove certain items, (it can be rather tricky if you're not used to it), there is also Symantec's removal tool to be found here:

Having never had Norton for years I can't vouch for the tool to be 100% effective but I reckon it might do the job.
Can I ask Shape, what AV are you replacing it with?

A program called 'Perfect Uninstaller' sorted me out! It is widely available on the (ahem) torrent sites!!
Revo Uninstaller works for me, I havent run across any trouble removing progs with it. It has different levels of removal and it gets rid of the left overs in the registry as well as any orphaned files that other uninstallers leave behind. Best of all the program is free.
