my computer will not let me view the avi files, I get audio but no visual, well I get a lot of colors and what not but no actual video. I thought that I downloaded the proper codec but I guess not???

Assuming you are using Windows.
Which media player are you using?
Try media player classic, VLC or GOM
and have you installed k-lite codec pack?
This will help you play most videos here
Also is it all .avi videos here, or just one particular thread or post.
