I have experimented at great length with freezing, thawing and using my cum! My first effort, some ten years ago, was the 'cumsicle'. I used the topping on a small bowl of fresh strawberries...yummmmm!
For myself, the best result have been from freezing the cum in an airtight plastic container. To defrost, I simply put the container in a larger container which is filled with warm water. The secret is to defrost it slowly. Steer clear of microwave defrosting...it's too easy to overheat it and destroy the flavor!

Like you I found thawing it in hot water is best and provides the best control.
