I was going to add some pictures to this thread but it says I have reached my maximum attachment limit. This appears to be under 1Mb and I notice others are attaching single files greater than this. Why is this ?

Niteowl is correct. You have been a member for several years but your post count is still very low so the anti-spam software is blocking your uploads. Make a few more legitimate posts and you will be clear for uploads.
