Before the recent changes, I used to stay logged-in most of the time. Now I get logged out after a few minutes' inactivity.
Is it supposed to work like this? It's very irritating, and I can't find a CP setting to change it.

Nobody know the answer and/or solution?
Am I the only one having this problem, or just the only one bothered about it?
I'm relatively new here but I've noticed it does seem pretty quick to log out. A bit of a pain, I agree.
Hmm, I'm not sure what would be causing that, I've stayed logged in per usual.
Have you recently changed your browser or the security settings on a browser?
I typically get logged out in the middle of an upload. Since it takes an hour or more to put up 5 or 6 20 MB files, I just do them on at a time, takes about 6-7 minutes each, but that way I don't get knocked off causing me to start all over again. Been like that for me since the beginning.
The same has happened to me. But it wasn't always like that. It was about two or three months ago that I started to get logged out. Before that, I would stay logged in for days. If someone has a suggestion how to change that I would appreciate it.
No and no. How could a browser setting do it in any case? It doesn't happen with any other messageboards I use, unless I tell the site to do it (and the FF site doesn't seem to have that option; ProBoard sites do, for example).
I'm pretty sure this started happening when you announced your new server a few weeks ago. It's intensely annoying.
I've added a poll to this thread. Please vote and leave a comment here. Thank you.
Have to say, this has only happened to me once, when I left some video parts uploading. Took about 20 minutes though I think, and it would have been before the new server was installed.
So I can't really say it's ever been a great inconvenience to me at least.
If it's really bothering you why not ask one of the admins?
They are the guys who will know the answers to this sort of thing.
Try clearing your cookies, the session time out on the server has not changed.
Let me know how you get on, if its still a problem after clearing your cookies I will look further into it
OK, Wicked, I tried it. I still get logged out. This never happened until quite recently.
I tried two different approaches:
1. Cleared only the obvious FF cookie (there was only one).
2. Cleared all cookies.
Same result for both. I think it kicks in before 15 minutes of inactivity, but that's as precise as I can be at the moment.
This is not nitpicking, ElG. I'm just trying to find out why the place isn't running as well as it used to, and hopefully get it fixed. It's surely the duty of every member to contribute to that goal.
I hadn't seen the reply from Wicked when I posed the question about monitoring. It probably came in while I was -- automatically -- logged out.
I've timed it, Wicked, and it's between 15 and 20 minutes, so probably 20. This is if I'm logged in to FF, but not active.
In case it's relevant, I'm using Firefox 3.0.4 on Vista HB.
It's the same for me... I think that 20 mins of inactivity is about the right amount to get logged out in.
Think about it, 300 users logged in for 20 mins doing nothing means that the main server has 300 x 1024 bytes in the stack for nothing.
Maybe it should be upped if posters with a poor connection can't u/l 20mb in 20 min.
So it has been changed, though I haven't noticed any performance improvement. It definitely didn't used to happen.
Just because people are logged in and idle according to the server doesn't mean that they're doing nothing. They might be reading a thread or preparing uploads or researching or whatever.
And what about the start-up overhead because people have to log in more often? Perhaps 60 minutes would be nearer ideal.
I stay logged in for weeks at a time and don't get logged out until I run my cleaner to erase all of my temp internet files and cookies. As a matter of fact I have been logged in since the 26th of December this time around. So it's not a server problem as far as I can tell.
Now having said all of that, when I come to the main page I am not showing as logged in,but as soon as I navigate to the forum I am. Just my experience.
I also let the forum sit in the background at times for a couple of hours while I look for something elsewhere, same thing...no logout.
I really don't think that it has been changed. It was always the same for me 20 mins ish.
Users log in and out all the time fingers the server loads are now much lower than they were before the move.
I feel the forum is running much better now.
Have you tried posting any vids? How did that go?
I have always gotten logged out if I am inactive for 20 minutes or so. It can be a bit annoying if you get distracted but I have learned to deal with it. If I am uploading large vid clips I always try to remember to keep another FF page open. Then every ten minutes or so I activate something. The rest of the time I just log back in if I get logged out. It really is not that big of a deal.
I can't use the 'remember me' option since I don't want the wrong eyes seeing some of what I have posted. But if you don't have that problem that might be the solution for you.
That looks like the answer. Thanks. Intuitive it ain't.
I used to design and code user interfaces for A Large Multinational, and using "Remember me" to mean "Stay logged in" looks just a bit Micro$ofty to me, like having "Shutdown" under the "Start" menu (which Vista still does).
To me, "Remember me" implies that you enter your id and the pw gets filled in automatically, not that you don't get logged out.
But no matter, that's just whingeing. Thanks again, Simon.
[Interestingly, it's not mentioned in the vBulletin manual, at least not if you search it for "remember". I'd say they need a Real Technical Writer.]
It's the stealth "don't-log-me-out" facility, known here as "remember me". If you click that box when you log in, you stay logged in, and that state persists.
You must've clicked it at some point, and so must I, but mine got reset somehow. It's OK now, and I know how to fix it if it happens again. (I've just signed up for another year's Platinum, so I must be happy with this fine site.)
I seem to have a different problem...
Logged in with Remember Me ticked.
If I enter the site by facialforum.net and click enter it shows me as logged out until I click a link (FAQ for example)
If I enter from a bookmark that points to my profile then I'm logged in.
So why does the main index.php not work correctly if I come from the proper entrance?
I just use my bookmark now... :D
Well our site is cookie based, the remember me works on cookies, ive seen this occasionally, but its usually an issue on the pc in question.
also i have noticed if you go to any ff address without the www. like http://facialforum.net/index.php it will treat you like you are logged out, thats because the cookie is stored as http://www.facialforum.net/index.php.
