I'm having the same problem, not being able to upload a gif as an avatar. So is this info really outdated: "Note: The maximum size of your custom image is 180 by 180 pixels or 256.0 KB (whichever is smaller)."?
If so, then I'll probably not use an animated avatar, because it's hard to see clearly what's in there after a certain size/quality threshold.

So what is the solution to this problem? I gave up over a year ago for this issue.
firstly, only plat or plat plus members can use animated avatars.
but animated gifs must be 180 x 180 or below.
if you are having trouble, please make sure you delete the origional one first.

I thought that was the issue. The notice on the home page mentions there is "...limited access to avatars..." but I could not find any definition of what that limit would be. I think my avatar would violate the rule of no photo-shopped or morphed pictures. It is the same as my current avatar but Pamela's face is cut out and fades from 100% to 0% transparency. Nothing is added that is not in the original pic though so it would just be an admin judgment call.
