convert dvd to avi, mpeg ect

can someone tell me the easiest way for a dummy (me) to convert dvd scenes into clips that are avi mpeg ect, I looked around but it's very confusing, I have stuff on dvd to post, just don't know how to go about converting and really not well versed with codecs and such.

Hey guy,

I know this won't be what you want to hear, but there really isn't a real easy way to do what you want. That is, freely. There are some programs that combine steps, but you have to pay for them. Free versions of converters generally won't rip the files for you. Since DVDs are encrypted file structures, you have to first decrypt them. I don't know if you are wanting to convert porn DVDs or regular movies or both, but I'll presume it's porn. Most Hollywood type films on DVD can still be ripped to your HD with freeware programs like DVD Decrypter and DVD Fab Decrypter. DVD Decrypter will probably rip any porn DVD out there, but some regular movies are using encrypting processes like Sony's ARccOS. (It's a copy-protection system developed by Sony used on some DVDs. Designed as an additional layer to be used in conjunction with Content Scramble System (CSS), the system deliberately creates corrupted sectors on the DVD, which cause copying software to produce errors.) In that case, you'll need DVD Fab Decrypter which is kept up to date for any assaults by Hollywood's piracy police. There are other DVD decryption programs out there, but these two are very easy to use and reasonably flexible.

So, the first step is to download and install a DVD ripper program. I'll be giving you plenty of links at the bottom of this post.

The next step needed is to convert the decrypted .VOB files to MPEG or AVI. This requires a program like DVD2AVI or DVDx (there are others). DVDx premium (pay) version will do the decryption process for you, but with the free version, you will still need to decrypt the files first using some program like the ones I mentioned. DVDx uses the DivX encoder for the AVI files, but it may work as well with the Xvid encoder. My understanding is that DVD2AVI hasn't been updated recently and you might want to use DGMPGDec instead. DGMPGDec is sort of a rebirth of the original DVD2AVI project. Another conversion program is call XMPEG. I've never used it, but it does have a wizard interface for newbies. Something to consider.

I can't stress enough the importance of going to the Doom9.org forum. Those folks know more about all this stuff than God. If you are not familiar with the fundamentals of DVDs and A/V file structures, they have a section on the forum called "The Basics". I would suggest you start there. They also have a lot of tutorials to walk you through some of the processes and various programs. I won't kid you, it will be a bit confusing at first, but the more you tinker with the programs and read up on things at the Doom9 forum, you'll be surprised at how easy some of this really is.
