Convert divx (only able to open with divx player)

Anyone know how to convert a .divx file that is openable only by divx player (as far as i know) to a more friendly format?

Have you tried renaming the extension name of the files from .divx to .avi
If you have the correct codecs installed then you should be able to
play it in media players such as, media player classic, VLC player, or
Gom player, in fact some if not all have the necessary codecs already
installed so you should be good to go.

I have tried opening with windows media player, media player classic and VLC. I know i have to codec b/c the divx player will play it, but when i try on another of those other three, the pictures has gray boxes all over it and you can't see anything
