Default Is there a software that does this?

    Hey,

Struggling to find what I'm looking for as I can't think of the right word for what I'm trying to do!

Basically, is there a software that will give you a list of all the folders and files on a hard drive (I'm talking an external hard drive if that makes any difference)?

Just as a text file or something like that, so in the event that there's a problem with the hard drive in future I'll know what files I need to replace.

    Thanks for any help.

    Bobby,

Tree Size Free will allow you to sort your drives by name, date, flie size etc. It will show a drive view and drill down to folder and file view and will let you print reports with all of the file names and file sizes.

I mostly use it to find the files that are hogging space but it is perfect for what you are looking to do.

Hope it works out...I owe you

You can create a list of all files with the folders they are in in Windows fairly easily.

Open a command window (Start|run| then type "cmd" and press enter)

Change to the drive you want to list. So, if you want to see files on your external drive type E: (or whatever letter your drive is assigned to) then press enter.

    Type the following command:

    dir /s /b>FileList.txt

That will create a file called FileList.txt that will contain the folders and names of all files. The output is not all that pretty but it sounds like you are just interested in a list which this will give you.

There was a little freeware utility that would do this sort of thing I seem to remember (not the one above), could print you a list off of the folders etc as well.

I will have a rummage about and see if I can find it again, though it was a while back since I have seen it.

That's pretty much exactly what I was looking for, cheers Ernie!

This is a cool program too, similar to WinDirStat in showing you what's taking up space on your hard drives. Just wondering if you know an option to save the report to your computer though, as there only seems to be a 'print report' option and I'm not exactly after a printed list of my porn collection!

Awesome helping out guys. I'll dish out some well-deserved rep now, and if you need anything from me I'll be glad to return the favour.

Good grief, Ernie, you're showing your age! DOS indeed!
