I know what you mean. I am the same way. If I try to really tan I just burn. Dealing with the flash and the different skin tones can be tricky. One thing that works well for me is using a short, desk lamp with a flexible neck. I turn on all the other lights but I place that lamp nearby and angle it so it bounces off the wall behind me, or off to the side, and that gives a good amount of close indirect light. As for the posing and shooting - both your pics and the load - if I am standing and the woman is kneeling or sitting on the floor I prefer she is leaning back against the bed or couch or something. Then I can brace the bottom of my legs against that and that really helps to keep you steady and aiming true.
