I guess that the jpeg quality is also set to a low(er) value (90'ish?) to get to 50KB.

I have taken our original (masked) photo 125 from this competition and manipulated it to see what will be best for next time.
I have uploaded the following files to see how the system treats them;
A. Original 3008x2000 (2.92Mb)
B. Resized (using MS "Resize tool") to 1023x680 (117kb)
C. Cropped "square" to 2000x2000 (1.93Mb)
D. Resized the 2000x2000 to 1024x1024 (152kb)
E. Cropped original down to 1024x1024 (612kb)

Let the games begin...

Quality wise they are all quite equal in my opinion.

But thats kinda expected as the actual resizing done by the forum does not degrade the quality - the main limiting factor will be the "jpeg quality setting" of the tool/script used by the forum to save the resized picture.
The only way to maintain the original quality is by attaching a zip archive - but IIRC forum rules don't allow that in the free section, only in the platinum area.
